The current situation is a bifurcated population of the original crew and 'muties' who are physically deformed existing in different parts of the ship. Orphans of the Sky is one of Robert Heinlein lesser known novels, even though it's one of his best. It's hard to talk about the novel without giving away its big idea, but it's not likely I'll convince you to read it without telling. This short novel is made up from two novelettes first published in in Astounding Science Fiction.

Orphans of the Sky is a science fiction novel by American writer Robert A. Heinlein, consisting of two parts: "Universe" and its sequel, "Common Sense". The two novellas were first published together in book form in "Universe" was also published separately in as a 10¢ Dell paperback. The work presents one of the earliest fictional depictions of a generation ship. Orphans of the Sky is one of the ur–generation ship tales. Heinlein immediately seizes on the possibility that something could go so disastrously wrong during the voyage such that the entire crew forgets it is on a ship. For all intents and purposes, the Ship is now the universe.
